Basel Hack – a digital impact
Last weekend, in Basel, was organized Hackathon where developers from around the world could meet and create great projects together. One of our SolDevelo’s developers had an occasion to work with them remotely from our office in Gdynia. Here are a few words from his feelings after Basel Hack:
The Hackathon started at 9 am Pitch Desk. It was the first part of the event where participants could present their ideas to the audience and choose one on which they will be working at the weekend. The most interesting projects presented on the Pitch Desk were:
- Plantonio – digital help reminds you about watering plants
- Deeplastify – the app shows you how much plastic is really involved in producing and delivering basic used goods
- Fourier Game – a game inspired by French mathematician Jean Baptiste
- ChezMa – meals on wheels service that brings tasty food with a sustainable footprint.
Our Project for Hackathon
I and a SwissTPH team were working on a new panel for a patient in the OpenIMIS project. (if you want to learn more about OpenIMIS read our article about it). Our goal was to create an app for users. In which it will be possible to check the history of medical visits, treatments, tests and future consultation. Due to the fact that OpenIMIS is working in developing countries without stable access to the Internet or with limited access, we have to use a specific technology which provides to use the application without the Internet. Such technology was a Progressive Web Application. Which is a type of application delivered through the web, built using common technologies in applications and websites. Characteristic features of PWA are:
- working offline (it means also loading pages in the app)
- pushing notifications
- and using HTTPS certification.
Unfortunately due to technical and communication problems, we didn’t achieve the goal which was to start building the application. Beyond problems, we made a good job – discovered problems which were unknown before this weekend. With the knowledge gathered during this hackathon, we will be able in the future to build the app faster and easier. Thanks to the job done and discovered information, we made a step in creating the app. Although we didn’t make anything big.
Summarizing, the whole hackathon was really great. It was a great occasion to meet new people and work with different developers from around the world. We could share knowledge with each other and discuss the hottest topics in the IT world. It was also the first time when people could link and take part in the hackathon remotely. Good idea for next Basel Hacks is to transmit the event. People from other regions could know what happens and watch for example Pitch Desk or awarding prizes.
The best project presented on the Basel Hack was Deeplastify. Which main topic is very popular and many people around the world try to minimalize producing plastics. They fit in with trends and made a really useful application. Second prize was for Fourier Game and the last place on the podium was for ChezMa. Winners got a money prize, keyboards and certificates.
On Basel Hack was presented more projects, all of them you can see at Basel Hack GitHub. Also, there is also a great article about Progressive Web Application on a Hackernoon if you want to learn more about it.
